Separation agreement

A written contract between separating spouses or partners that settles property, debt, support and parenting. In Canada it is a domestic contract that must be in writing, signed and witnessed; in the US it is usually incorporated into the divorce decree. It is enforceable as a contract and, once filed, as a court order for support.
