Four co-parenting apps, side by side.

Not always. If you and your co-parent communicate well and agree on the schedule and costs, a shared calendar and email may be enough. An app earns its place when the same arguments keep coming back: who agreed to what, who owes what, and what was actually said.

Of the four apps compared here, on yearly billing in October 2026, Tandem was $119.88 a year for both parents on its Essential plan and $203.88 on Premium. TalkingParents started at $154 for two parents, AppClose at $167.76 and OurFamilyWizard at $220. The other three bill each parent separately, so check the cost for both of you together, and check each app's pricing page before you subscribe.

Of the four apps, only Tandem lists one price that covers both parents, expense requests that quote a clause from your agreement, a calendar built from the agreement you upload, bringing WhatsApp chats and emails into the record, travel consent letters and a quick-exit button. It also seals each item when it is saved, with a timestamp from an independent authority. OurFamilyWizard, TalkingParents and AppClose move money inside the app and have app-store apps. Tandem does not move money: you log your own bank transfers in the shared record, with no Tandem fee.

Of the four apps compared here, only Tandem lists this. WhatsApp exports and emails saved as .eml files go into the same timestamped record, alongside PDFs and screenshots. Phones do not let any app read your text messages or call log, so Tandem takes texts as screenshots or PDFs and you log calls by hand. Whatever app you use, keep the originals, and ask your lawyer how your province or state treats them.

On OurFamilyWizard, one parent adds an expense and the other can approve or refuse it before it is paid. AppClose reimbursement requests also track approval or denial. Tandem Premium adds the agreement: the request quotes the clause you choose from your uploaded plan, shows each parent's share and a reply-by date, and your co-parent approves, asks a question or declines with a reason. Each step is timestamped. Tandem does not move money, so you pay by your own bank transfer, attach proof, and your co-parent confirms it arrived.

No. Tandem records expenses, approvals and proof of payment, but you pay by your own bank transfer, such as Interac e-Transfer or Zelle. There is no Tandem fee on payments. OurFamilyWizard, TalkingParents and AppClose can move money inside their apps, though OFWpay and AppClose ipayou are US only. TalkingParents charges 2% to 4% on each in-app payment, depending on plan, and AppClose says it charges no transaction fee.

No. A tap in an app is a record between the two of you. A border or airline officer has no way to verify it, and many will ask for a signed letter instead. The Government of Canada recommends that a child travelling without both parents carry a consent letter signed by each parent who is not travelling, ideally witnessed by a notary, and other countries can ask for one too. Tandem's letter is laid out like the Government of Canada's recommended letter, in English or French, and is filled in from the trip your co-parent approves in the app, with signing steps for every province and state. Your co-parent can e-sign it in the app, and the signed PDF is filed and saved on your phone. A letter signed in ink in front of a witness or notary is strongest at the border, so print a copy for that too. Of the four apps compared here, only Tandem lists travel consent letters.

AppClose is in the table above. It says it is the most downloaded co-parenting app. It has app-store apps, in-app payments in the US with no transaction fee, unlimited recorded calls and a 60-day free trial, and each parent pays for their own plan. On its own pages we could not find expense requests that quote your agreement, a calendar built from an uploaded agreement, travel consent letters or a quick-exit button. For two parents, Tandem Essential costs less.

A clear record written at the time is easier for a lawyer or mediator to use than a pile of screenshots. The apps keep records in different ways: AppClose and OurFamilyWizard offer certified records, TalkingParents offers printed records with a notarised affidavit, and Tandem seals each item when it is saved with a timestamp from DigiCert, an independent authority. Whether any record is accepted as evidence is up to the court, so talk to your lawyer about your situation.

Tandem and AppClose both let you start on your own. In Tandem, your calendar, expenses, notes and imported emails and WhatsApp chats still build a timestamped record until your co-parent joins. Not every app works that way, so check before you choose. If the conflict is high, a parenting coordinator or mediator can help you agree on one tool, and your parenting plan can name the app you both use.

The parenting plan is the agreement: schedule, holidays, decision-making and how costs are shared. The app is how you live it day to day. The closer the app follows your plan, the less there is to argue about.

Check who can see your data, whether the company sells it or shows ads, whether you can export your record, and whether you can delete your account. A good app answers all four plainly on its website. Tandem says it does not sell data or show ads, removes location data from photos, stores photos and voice notes encrypted and never sends them to AI, backs up nightly with encryption, and lets you export or delete your record.
