Shared parenting and a job in another city: Alberta

Chris and Dana, separated two years with an alternating-week plan for a 7-year-old. Dana received a job offer in Calgary, 300 kilometres from Red Deer.

About these examples. Each is a composite built from typical FairWell cases with details changed. Numbers are illustrative of how the rules apply, not predictions for your situation.

The route

Their FairWell parenting plan already contained a relocation clause requiring 60 days notice and mediation before any court step. Dana gave notice with a proposal; Chris objected; they mediated.

Outcome

Because time had been substantially equal, Dana would have carried the burden of proving the move was in the child's best interests. The mediated result: Dana moved, the child stayed primarily with Chris during the school year, Dana had three of four weekends and most of the summer, and Dana paid child support at the table amount less a travel-cost adjustment.

Cost and time

Three mediation sessions, roughly $2,400 split. No court application. Amended parenting plan signed within ten weeks of the notice.
